  • Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): Medium minus intensity aromas show coffee, slight leather, plums, sweet spice and touch of rancio. Medium plus intensity acidity, shows plums and a little prune, that sweet spice, smidge of rancio. Very nice.

  • Purchased for $19. Lazy afternoon, so decided to open this LBV from Fonseca and watch some Portuguese soccer. I'm not sure why I don't buy more Fonseca. I usually pass them by when in the wine shop, but I always enjoy their wine every time I have it. This was no exception. This LBV is bottled unfiltered, which I prefer. Really inky dark garnet in color. The nose isn't giving much, just some sweet blackberry and hints of spice. But the palate is delicious, as one would expect from a 2016. Sweet, but not overly sweet, jammy black fruits. Boysenberry, blackberry, vanilla, spice. The tannins are still firm here and the acidity is juicy. I think Fonseca is more about finesse than the Symington house style. This really coats the palate, though. This was good with some air, but this cash definitely age. At $19, I'd love to go back and get 6 more and track them over the next 6 years. Grade: A-
