I like this better than last year’s releases from Ampeau. Color - nicely bricked. Subdued fruit to the nose, with something like tobacco coming through. While the fruit flavors are now joined by oak, herbs and other flavors I don’t have the tools to describe, the fruit still is there and very present. I’m still a fan of younger Burgundy, but with this one I can now see where the older wine gang is coming from.

This is very good. Opened 2 plus hours before drinking. Gets better with even more time. Interesting nose and good complexity. Showing the pedigree of the 2002 vintage

Lovely wine, drinking at what seems to be perfect maturity right now. Silky and delicate, with sweet red fruit and bright acidity. This is extremely tasty wine, and the fact that you can still pick up bottles of 02' for ~$125 is very cool!

I’m admire this domaine’s approach to releasing their wines. It’s not the most cost effective way of doing business but it does mean the wines are often ready to drink when they are finally released.
This needed some time to open up, showing much better on day 2. It was tight and acidic on day 1, verging on “green.”
Once it did hit its stride, it showed well with lots of sous bois and mildly sweet red fruit. There’s still enough fruit but this has firmly entered the secondary/tertiary stage.
Which means that if you’re looking for more fruit, this might not be the wine for you.

Brick hued. Tobacco on the nose but in the mouth the dark fruits are thin and unbalanced by a lot of acidity.
