So I bought a cellar; 11/12/2022-12/31/2030: Big heavy bottle - took from the cellar and tried to use a fun antique basket to keep it on its side, but it didn’t fit. Oh well. Used a Durand to be safe, but cork was in great condition - 35% seepage maybe? Beautiful smell on the cork. Did not decant. Poured deep and dark. First sniff of initial pour was hot - I only smelled alcohol. Let it sit for 20 minutes and the fruit was there. Raspberry and cherry for sure. On the palate, fresh to cooked fruit. Certainly not all fresh. But in a good spot. Still some slight tannins. Pretty solid for a Saturday night while working a puzzle. Even my wife enjoyed it - and she typically doesn’t like wine older than 10 years. First of the Trefethen trove from the cellar I purchased.

Well. It was not until I delved into Cellar Tracker to write a note about this wine that I realized that this was the last bottle of Trefethen that I had in my possession. Oh, but what a bottle it was. I had joined the Trefethen wine club how ever many years ago and I was a loyal member until I moved to the fine wine abyss that is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have been steadily making my way through my stash, though, and tonight was the end. Rich dark fruit, tobacco, earth, a bit of everything here. Balance throughout, leading to a long finish. Excellent.
This wine was right in the sweet spot...not too old or young. It still had wonderful red and black fruits on both the nose and palate, along with the more mature flavors of graphite, leather, and a hint of forest floor. It shows a nice acid core, framed by the fruit and other flavors. It had a beguiling anise note on the finish, which was quite long (> 1 minute). The tannins were perfectly integrated, with no astringency or sharp corners, lending the wine a supple, round mouthfeel (medium - full bodied).

(Trefethen Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve) Inky purple in color, the 2004 Reserve is redolent of ripe black cherry, dark plum, cassis, cola, chocolate, and leather. Complex, balanced, and richly textured, it features a concentrated palate with flavors of blackberry, clove, black cherry, sweet oak, and tobacco lingering on the finish. Tasted from a magnum. Very nice, drinking beautifully. It has many years to go. Definitely making me a believer in large format bottles.
