  • 100% Chardonnay. Disgorgement March 2022, zero dosage. Light golden, fine bead; medium intensity aromatics, some brioche, white floral, pear, fresh citrus; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, balanced mouthfeel (would not have guessed zero dosage), certainly fresh but with a certain density and richness that suggests some depth and slight age; medium length finish without quite the length that the palate would suggest in complexity. 91, fair value for ~$75, but I have a slight preference for BdN for Marguet and their higher end cuvees.
Day 2: Similar, not better or worse.

  • Last tasted this when I visited Benoit back in the Spring of 2022. Hard to think that was almost 2 years ago....so when I found some of this for sale at retail, I figured I would give it a go again as the wine intrigued me when I tasted it with him. There is some of the Marguet clovey wood infused into the wine but it seems more seasoned in tone, not overt. Light honeysuckle and citrus aroma. When I let the chill drop from the wine, then it can show the fruit signature that's here and it's pretty consistent to what I found in 2022. There's the banana here, along with the orange, and this time there is some apricot flesh. Finishes with fennel, light green citrus and a touch of buttered bread. Delicious and I'd say this is in a real good place to make a smile.

  • New years day champagne with lunch. Great mouthfeel on the Vertus, but lacking the herbal and spice notes in the Shaman. Nice raspberry notes, yellow apple, florals, orange and light almond notes. Round and sensual palate here.

  • Tasting with Benoit Marguet (in Ambonnay at the winery): Had to add this to the database so I suspect this is a brand new cru for Benoit. Disgorged March 2022 from 100% Chardonnay, no dose. Of all the cru wines we tasted for the visit, this was the most round, yet for me this had an intriguing flavor profile. This cuvee has the palate expression of left to right, so think broad, more approachable than the other cru wines. Yellow apple, orange, lemon curd and even a banana. Very cool stuff. Different for me as to what I think of Marguet.
