  • Saturday hangout (Chicago, IL): The nose on this was initially marred with quite a bit of volatile acidity, but that blew off after a bit. What's left is actually a fairly big example of Beaujolais, with lots of sappy black fruit. The palate is quite dense, and there's quite a bit going on, as long as you're willing to put up with some weird animale funk. There's a very pleasant sweet black fruit character here, and it's tied up nicely with the acidity. Served blind, I'm not certain I'd be able to call it Beaujolais.

  • Perhaps more interesting than good, but pretty interesting, and opened not a day too soon. The fruit has turned dark, leathery, and fully tertiary with flavors of grains and salted meat, but the texture is very much in line with the way these show in their youth - full and fleshy, plush with a polished, glossy veneer. Once those leathery notes surface I figure a wine isn't far from cracking up, but for now this is still hanging in there.
