  • Drank from a magnum. Just past prime but still drinking well. Leathery dark fruit, tobacco and mineral. Moderate acid and little tannin at this stage.

  • Opened a 6L around noon fir a 6:00 PM party. The wine seemed you and tannic, at first but turned rounder, softer and more refined the the party drew near. It was excellent and well worth storage and serving such a-beast of a bottle.

  • Not much to add from notes in February of this year. Still drinking beautifully after 1.5 hour decant through aerator. The cork broke in half but good seal nonetheless. The bottle has been laid down and no signs of streaking. Ink staining on the cork end, this vintage still has some life. I love the old world Bordeaux hints. This is not a California fruit bomb, but a subtle, silky although medium finish. The nose is lovely and it's such a pleasure to sip. Sticking with 94, I would score higher if it were more complex and longer finish.

  • It's amazing, soft cabernet, atypical of Napa cabs, excellent nose and mouthful. I tasted plums, currants and a slight hint of olives. I'm impressed this wine has withstood the test of time. There's nothing complicated here, just smooth subtle sexy wine. I'd go so far as to say this will hold up for another 4 years, although my cork crumbled upon removal, still tight seal. No bricking, dark purple and resolved tannins. Wish I had more, 2 bottles remaining!

  • 5 oz Coravin pour from a magnum. Rested for about 30 mins, then sipped slowly while watching Germany’s final attemp to stay at the World Cup.

The color was still deep to medium garnett with no obvious signs of age.

Once the wine warmed up, the nose gave rich aromas of loam, twigs, blackberries, currant and smoke. The tertiary smells are starting to show, but the palate is still focused on blue and black fruit with a little olive and pith at the finish. It has the hallmark smooth mouthfeel of Stags Leap now that the tannins are mostly resolved. Once This bottle is opened, properly decanted and paired with the correct food, it may be a 93 or 94.

While the wine in beatiful now, there is no reason to hurry. The acid and remainig tannins will hold for at least 5 more years and probably more in larger format.

I wonder what will become of Pillar Rock now that Jean Phillips owns the land? I hear she bought it in 2011 but have seen vintages as recent as 2014. Maybe they are buying her grapes.

And, well, Sorry Germany, see you in 2026.
