  • This pours light garnet in the glass, just a touch cloudy with light bricking. The nose is lovely on opening, but really soars with a couple hours of air showing bright, rich fresh cherry, black currant, animal fur, white pepper, fresh blooming peonies, charcoal, toasted cumin seed, worn leather, thyme, dried ginger, and a touch of blood orange in the upper register. The palate enters on the deep and rich fruit, turning to medium dusty tannin and medium plus acid. The finish is just a touch clipped by the structure, but still has some moderate length showing leather, cumin seed and dark cherry. This is a glorious showing from a pristine bottle with a high fill and good cork. While I'm perhaps being a touch generous with the score it is just showing so wonderfully and wide open, especially on the nose. I think given the structure of the palate there is some merit to leaving this to age a few more years to let it further soften. On the other hand the nose is so wonderful today, I can't blame someone if they wanted to open one now.

  • Second Sunday Group: 1995 Beaune (Eagle Brook CC): A bottle from Jim’s cellar, opened in his honor. Quickly double decanted off its sediment three hours before it was served with dinner. Cherry and earth notes. The palate follows the bouquet and still has a good bit of fruit. Very nice, and drinking very well at the moment.

  • Past peak certainly, but very delicate and the decline was not too pronounced. The fruit was more of a hint now with more earthiness

  • A great mature Savigny les Beaune. It has wonderful dark red fruits, blue violets, and still has a nice mellow tannic backbone, beautiful minerality and balanced acidity. Lovely to drink, but alas it was my last bottle.

  • A lovely mature burgundy. The color is amber at the rim and it is a lighter to medium bodied wine. On the palate it has red fruits, minerals, a little sour cherry and maybe som green tea. It has bright acidity, but I believe that the tannins are resolved. While the wine is doing well today, I am not sure how long I would keep the remaining bottles. Why not live in the present moment and pull some corks on this one?
