Deep liquor concentrate fruit, creme de casis like. Red and dark berries, very opulent syrah/grenache. Very complex oak influence; spice, milk chocolate, leather, coffee. Notes of bacon :) Silky, sexy mouth feel. Full body, great finish: acidity and tannins in balance. All of it lathered in savory funk. A++. Looking forward to the next bottle.

I've had extraordinary luck with these over the years (producer and vintage), but alas my luck is running out on the 2001. The same rich aromatics of mocha and black fruit are hanging on, but the alcohol has risen in prominence as the fruit begins to dry out, throwing things out of balance. Still, we have had a great run, and the 2005 magnum of Clos des Truffiers I had a few months ago was amongst my top handful of Syrah ever.

Another winner, consistent with prior notes. Not a style for everyone, of course, but at age 18, color me impressed. A poor man's SQN, showing similar weight, concentration, power and balance. Some heat on the nose. Ripe, somewhat jammy black fruit, dill, olive, graphite and leather, with a glycerined texture.

Syrah Night with an Expanded Version of Our Tasting Group (Bear and Star, Los Olivos, CA): I liked it more than most. Relatively restrained for this bottling, very much in balance. Ripe, almost jammy black fruit, dill, olive, graphite and leather, with fine acidity and a layer of glycerin adding texture.
