NobleRottersSydney - Oz cabernet blind (Verde, East Sydney): ) {cork, 13.5%} (Dick - guest) Aged vanilla and coconut nose. Way too much oak, and not much of anything else. A musty, oaky and hollowed-out palate, with little tannin, a wash of flavour only on the tip of the tongue, and a short finish. I thought this might have been an ancient off-vintage Bin 707; that a top year like 1991 produced this wine confirms to me that Bin 407 should have been a one-time wine in 1990 and not persevered with. Well past best unless you’re an oak addict.

Stonking wine! In the perfect place right now. The sediment deposits on decanting gave the game away as the colour was a beautiful, rich, deep garnet, going mildly translucent. Nose of quite fresh blackcurrant and earth/dusty oak. Not much sign of classic Cab Sauv tertiary elements on the nose but the palate had them in spades with a powerful, delicate length to it. Incredibly moreish: The fight over the dregs in the decanter was most unbecoming. Why haven't I got more good Oz Cab Sauv in my cellar?

NobleRottersSydney - Penfolds prior to 1992 (blind) (Darling Mills, Glebe): Super nose of meat, blackberries and vanilla oak. Just screams cabernet! But the palate doesn’t really live up to the nose. Surprising to find a cabernet so light on the back palate, and the length of finish was medium at best. Hmmm.
