It was apparent upon opening and the first pour this was very much still there. Dark cherry, tar, tobacco, earth/terior. Tannins integrated, wonderfully balanced with a medium finish. Amazing what 60+ years in a bottle can do. Definitely a treat to have such a wonderful wine from a legendary vintage….shared with the most special people.

Sam's 60th Birthday (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Small glass, brief note. Enticing old Bordeaux aromas and flavors with mature black plum, cigarbox and well cooked mushroom. Still bright enough, and certainly clean enough.

Back in NYC (Francie): Drinking incredibly well. It was opened maybe a course before and then poured through a strainer. Amazing how young it's drinking given the age (happy 60th wine!). It's still got some fruit well balanced with the library and cigar. Drank next to two 82s and don't think if it had been blind I'd have picked the older wine.
A evening of 20+ year old Bordeaux (Wilmette Harbor Club, Wilmette IL): This is perfumed and showing a bit long in the tooth as there is a dryness to the fruit of dried cranberries, dark red cherries, leather, tobacco leaf, mushrooms, and cedar notes. The nose is clearly on the downslope, but there is good depth and fragrance. The Medium bodied feel is lithe and balanced with tart, medium acidity and resolved, medium tannins. There is a drying quality to the acidity and the feel is lacking some depth. There is still time left on this though it has seen better days. Thankfully it comes across as going gently into that good night.

Back to the auctions (Bar Bould Sud): Unfortunately was off. Sometimes that happens.
