Tried this as a 20yo aged Hunter red and what a great example it is. Medium bodied with lots of well rounded red fruits and that Hunter earthiness that keeps you coming back for more. Starting to slightly brown with lots of flakey sediment telling me 20 years in the cellar for long enough.

Tyrrell's Vat 9 Vertical: Contrasted with the 2000 Vat 9, the 2003 was slightly less expressive on the nose. Red fruited, midbodied with earth and spices. Tannins fully resolved and with a good acid line, there is a brett layer that rests lightly on top of the fruit like a blanket. If you can see through this, an enjoyable wine that likely is as good as it gets, and best approached now. However, like a Magic Eye puzzle, once you notice the brett layer it is hard to unsee. Cork.

Decanted and drank straight away. Disjointed for the first hour or so, barnyard funk and hunter earth colliding. It settled into a mix of violets and earth, not unlike Lake's Folly fame. The palate carries similar, adding bitter liquorice and plum notes to finish. Medium bodied. Good, albeit past its peak.

Lots of violets on the nose along with tobacco and earth. The palate is medium bodied and medium length with quite good balance. Enjoyable.
