Clear, medium ruby, light at the rims. Nose of blackfruit, primarily blackberry, herbaceousness, medicinal, game, earth, smoke. Palate: High acidity, tannins are high and unsettled, alcohol seems higher than it likely is, medium bodied. This wine is unbalanced, with the fruit hidden behind acid and rough tannins. The green notes in this wine are all too apparent on the palate. I will revisit this wine in 24 hours, but for now, this is an unfortunate fall from the grace of the 2019, owing most likely to the very difficult 2021 vintage in Bordeaux.

Château Mondorion, Etoiles de Mondorion, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, 2021: Deep ruby appearance. The nose is clean, with notes of blackberries, black currants, wet earth, tobacco leaves, and a hint of bell pepper. Medium-bodied, medium intensity. On the palate, tart blackberries, graphite, some earthiness, a touch hollow on the mid-palate, some bell pepper, licorice, with notes of roasted coffee beans and mushrooms, medium acidity, and medium tannins and some cigar on a medium finish. Pleasant but the challenging vintage comes through very clearly. 12.5% Abv. Drink 2024-2029. 88+
