  • Beautiful, but heady nose of creme de cassis, black currant, charred cedar and spice box. Medium-full bodied, this is in fine shape and drinking well. Tannins have resolved nicely and there are flavors of blackberry and black currant as well as spicy oak and a hint of cocoa. Drink now-2025 92

  • 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (Eagle Brook CC): We have found the 2000s to be aging at a glacial pace and found that the lesser wines from the vintage are only now beginning to offer true enjoyment. We thought it would be fun to put a cheapie into the tasting and see what the group would think. Double decanted off its sediment two hours before the flight was poured.

Dark crimson/garnet color. Notes of tobacco, currants and forest floor. Tannins have softened nicely and this offers a mix of red and black fruit on the palate with hints of cigar box as well. Balanced, with a nice finish.

The group nailed it as Bordeaux but thought it much younger and also more expensive. This was $17 when I purchased it in March 2003 and it's been in our passive cellar ever since. A wonderful showing, drinking well above its meager price point- a testament to the strength of the vintage and its ability to lift all boats so-to-speak. I'll hold our last bottle for a couple of years yet to see what happens.

  • Bought 6b for 18/b from suburban Chicago retailer 13.5 years ago. Decanted and found heavy sediment. Beautiful, rich red color; fragrant St Em red fruits; rich, round mouthfeel; good finish. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I consider this outstanding when considering quality, age, and price.
