  • Geez this is intense. "Port like intensity" comes to mind, in a bad way. Makes me think more of a zinfandel or port. It is all quality tho, huge presence that right now is really sullenly somewhat closed. Big alcohol, material, and doozy. Took a few hours with a poured off glass in bottle to semi open. I was relieved to find a lack of any discernable oak. My take - hold for ten-fifteen years and then it's good for a good drunk with boar or some very hard core meats. Now, hands off. Will last for ages. But not really my style anymore, at all.

I do wonder about the complexity of this. Right now so primary it's hard to tell. I would guess it will unwind in a positive way. But hard to tell.

  • For a Southern Rhone from 2000, this is downright embryonic. Very dark purple-red. Rather closed now, even after a day open, with California-esque weediness to the suggestions of black fruit and vague smoke. Intense on the palate but not nearly weighty enought to suggest the analytic 15.5% alcohol, with powerful tannins from what was clearly a vigorous extraction. Give it at least a few more years, and preferably more.

  • Bought at the domaine. Decanted for two hours prior to tasting. Nose of blackberry, licorce and cassis. Palate of dark berries, leather and cassisthat comes at you in waves...and waves. Long finish. This is really good stuff.

The wine has really evolved from the alcohol bomb tasted on release. It is now smooth and enjoyable. But it is more sophisticated than many 2000 CdP's...not at all the rustic Rasteau you might expect.

    Andre Romero makes excellent wines.
