Translucent dark ruby. Nose of fennel, violets, fine earth, berry, plum pits. Layers of classy, integrated red and darker berry fruit cascading effortlessly on the tongue intermixed with finely cut rock and iron. Wonderful balance of fresh acidity counterpointing still-firm but softened tannin. Longer finish of lively red raspberry, deep earth, iron particles, and a hint of holiday spice. Lighter weight but quite lyrical. A wonderful wine experience on our 31st.

Side by side Clos St Denis 06. More earthy, less clean and more full bodied vs the Clos St Denis. Missing some precision and possibly not the best bottle for this wine. Still a good showing if not at the level of its sibling tonight.

Dinner at home (Chicago, IL): Served single blind next to Rousseau, and on the pop and pour it was pretty hard to tell the difference. With air though it's pretty clear. This is a lighter wine; less ripe and intense, but with much brighter aromatics and lift. There's a strong hint of the classic 2006 earthiness (slight beetroot quality) in both of these wines. The vintage character definitely shows.

1st of 6, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, relatively transparent ruby, little development; complex attractive bouquet, cherry, hint of macerated raspberry, earthy minerality, classy; fullish, fine structure, length, persistence, ok concentration, more backward and less elegant than last week's Denis but possibly with more underlying heft, upside, 20 years at least. F+ (18).
