35 years old. At table, there was some disagreement about how well this bottle was showing. No question, this bottle was at the end of its life - tired the best word I can find - but not so tired that it didn't have a story to tell.
Color was still clear and no sign of bricking or garnet. On the nose, unmistakeable notes of cinnamon and trace earthiness. On the palate, tannins fully resolved; some felt too persistent, but I found soft and balanced. What was lacking was a long finish; other than a lingering reminder of the acidity on the tip of the tongue.
So then, what is the story? One of the first vintages of a then-young winemaker, at a time when so many of the controls we now take for granted weren't understood or in place - this bottle reminds me of just how good a wine can be in the hands of a talented vintner, and a window into what can become of a wine given many years of patience.
