  • A blend of Barossa Shiraz and Coonawarra Cab. Bottle no. 2045. 14% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Slightly translucent and somewhat developed dark cherry red color with a hint of maroon hue towards the pale rim. Somewhat modern and slightly sweet-toned but also quite complex and pretty attractive nose of ripe dark-toned fruits, some mint chocolate, a little bit of blackcurrant jam, light tertiary pruney tones, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of raisin. Although showing some development, the nose feels surprisingly youthful for its age. The wine is full-bodied, chewy and quite savory on the palate with quite powerful flavors of ripe dark plums, some chocolatey oak, a little bit of minty herbal character, light notes of extracted woody bitterness and savory oak spice, a hint of mocha and a touch of jammy blackcurrants and blackberries. The wine feels nicely structured with its moderately high acidity and firm, somewhat grippy tannins. The high alcohol lends some warmth to the palate. The finish is juicy, spicy and somewhat woody with a hint of alcohol warmth and very long flavors of mint chocolate, some blackcurrant jam, a little bit of developed pruney character and light notes of raisins, a hint of extracted woody bitterness and a touch of ripe blackberry. The tannins make the wine finish on a moderately grippy note.

A surprisingly serious, structured and impressively developed effort for its genre. Sure, the wine shows those typical characteristics of a 2000's Aussie red - liberal use of oak, tons of fruit and very sweet-toned, almost jammy taste - but the wine has still retained great structure to keep the wine from coming across as blowzy fruit bomb and the overall style manages to combine wonderfully the youthful vibrancy of the fruit to the more developed tertiary tones. The wine isn't on its plateau of maturity yet, and based how much life there is to this wine even at the age of 18 years, I can see this keeping well at least another decade. Not my favorite style of wine, but I'd be a fool not to recognize its high quality. A positive surprise and great value at 30€.

  • OK I was probably too harsh on this in the past. I'm still not convinced b it but it retains good freshnes and depth

  • Past its best

  • Soulless aussie goo. Destroyed by a bunch of similar era Chapoutier syrah open next to it.
