Thomas’s Northern Rhone extravaganza (Cabotte): First of a case acquired from auction. Immediately charismatic, and clearly less conventional than the other wines we've tried, with characteristic notes of smoke and game, sure, but also a touch of volatility and a hint of Brett. Tense and very slightly natty on the palate, which had such energetic fruit. It's exciting, compelling stuff, and went so well with the dish. My #2 tonight, and the group's WOTN.

Syrah at Cabotte (Cabotte): Fantastic, super classic nose - meatiness incarnate! Very pronounced. Generous on the palate too; plenty of fruit and lovely tertiary stuff. It’s all there! Strikes me as a dead ringer for Cote Rotie rather than necessarily a stereotypical Cornas. In any case, one of the best wines I’ve had for a long time.

Allemand Chaillot survey (Chicago, IL): Nothing like the bottle tasted a fortnight ago. I suspected a bit of TCA, but also it seemed like there was some heat damage as well.

Would be an A+ for the fragrance alone. A hauntingly beautiful aroma; a bright violet topnote dominates and beneath is an array of flavours ranging from higher toned olive and peppery notes to more low toned gamey and earthy flavours. Texture is pure silk, there's still some tannin but it feels very fine grained, and the overall package is incredible.

"I'm not having a glass of wine; I'm having six. It's called a tasting and it's classy." (Chicago, IL): This was my favourite of the syrahs today, and it was up against some very stiff competition, including the 1989 Chave and 1999 Gallet. But man, this is the epitome of classic Allemand -- that silky texture intermingled with ripe black fruit, floral tones, olive brine, and just the right balance between rusticity and polish. Drinks like it's at peak (or at least some sort of local maximum) right now. Like the other syrahs on the table today, this is another example of the way syrah ought to be. Absolutely stunning stuff from Allemand.
