Contains elements of the traditional and californian chardonnay models. Toasty oak sparkles on the nose and you think you are being ushered into yet another california over-oaked butter bomb, yet the diacetyl does not really show up as expected. Instead, notes of white flowers, chalk, sourdough, and lemon drops candy follow the oak. Upon slow observation, hints of reduction poke through in the form of onions or garlic. A thoroughly enjoyable nose which belies the high ripeness of this wine, which is immediately apparent in the mouth. Distractingly hot in the mouth, unfortunately, but stays just barely on the right side of the fresh/flabby border. The finish echoes the lemon drop candy character and rides a nice underlying minerality. Overall: a unique combination of old and new world elements.
