  • Stupifying, literally. Drunk in 2007. Eight or so fairly veteran aged-wine drinkers all agreed it was simply too old. There it sat for a few hours while we ate and drank half a dozen other wines, then someone said, "Y'all gotta try this Rioja Alta again," and WHAM, it was the wine of the night. It went from a unanimous negative to a unanimous positive. We were humbled.

  • That '70's show...all '70's all the time: Loire, Spain, Ca, Bordeaux, Port. (Applewood): Boy, did these guys hit home runs in '73. Their '73 Centenario is one of the better Spanish wines I've had and this wine comes close to that height. Rich, deep and brooding on the nose and palate with black and red fruit, spicy cedar, worn wood and light eucalyptus notes. The wine is dense without being heavy and unfurls like a peacock's tail to show all its glory. Wonderfully balanced and still has further aging potential, though I love how it shows now. A/A-.
