Bought this bottle at the winery's tasting room in Paso Robles for $24 and took to a Mediterranian (sp?) restaurant last night and drank with roasted chicken (Wild Horse's website suggests pairing this Austrian varietal with chicken; we've been sitting on this bottle for two years waiting for the right opportunity to crack it open). We didn't exactly remember much about this wine when we tasted it at the winery two years ago, but it's a very interesting varietal. We would compare Blaufrankisch to Pinot Noir; it has Pinot's peppery bite, an underlying muskiness, with subtle berry and cherry fruit tones. The wine didn't have much of a bouquet, but it was fairly tasty, pretty smooth, and overall, just real interesting. Not bad at all, but we're not sure we'd bother buying this wine again, especially when there are so many good Pinots for similar money (which Wild Horse does pretty well). No regrets buying/drinking this bottle, but it was mostly an educational experience more than anything else.
