The ‘82 Bartolo is a dark, meaty Barolo yet also shows the freshness and finesse of aged Bartolo. On the nose, I found smoky, slightly dried and concentrated dark red and black cherry fruit, iron, mint, sweet spices, and licorice. On the palate, I found dark red fruit, smoke, and sweet spices, and the texture was medium in body with good concentration and very smooth with tannins largely resolved, poking out a bit towards the finish. The finish was very long, with smoke, sweet balsamic spice, and dark fruit, with the balsamic and smoke tones lingering long after. The fruit showed the characteristic sweetness of aged Bartolo. This was a very enjoyable bottle, seeming to be about at peak or maybe slightly past it.
Tasted from magnum; sourced from RWC ex-cantina.

A beautifully mature nose. Florals, as much violet as rose, porcini, a little heme, meatiness. This has a gracefulness and mid weighted subtle power delivered without weight. A harmonious, wine of balance and understated depth and grace.A great mix of savory and fruit. There was a clarity and freshness drinking this, like drinking mineral water. Fully resolved, but it should hold for a good while. I can't think of a reason to wait though. A wine of cohesion, where nothing stands out, it just is. Lovely. 95

Out of magnum and it seemed like a fine bottle with flavors of dark cherries and licorice but I felt it lacked the intensity and vigor of the best older bottles of Mascarello. As much as I love it when you get a perfect aged bottle of Bartolo's wine, there are just too many bottles out there that aren't up to snuff whether from shipping issues or a dirty, inconsistent cellar.

Kelly, Kevin, RJ and Tom's excellent NYC adventure; 12/1/2017-12/3/2017 (New York City): When Tom opened this earlier, he thought that it might be madeirized. Initially subtle red and black fruit, dry cherry, dry fig, a hint of madeira, caramel, iron and mineral. With air, riper and sweeter fruit, leather and tar emerge, also noticeable VA. Good concentration, dry cherry and dry fig driven palate impression, bright acidity, strong iron and a medium long slightly coarse and rustic finish. With air, VA becomes very pronounced. Not a representative bottle but still enjoyable.

La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): I think my favorite wine of the second flight. This was drinking really well. There’s depth and class and style and structure to this wine.
