  • The things you run across when doing some cellar reorganization...

This was in my inventory, but had not thought about it in years. My last taste was seven years ago, and given the vintage (though not lousy everywhere, lousy reputation) I did not have high hopes, but it was very good. Grilled peach, honey, baking spices and some of that horseradish bite that makes Rieslaner so distinctive were all part of the mix. Still quite sweet, there was plenty of balancing acid, and the finish was long and spicy.

No issues with potentially aging this further, though I suspect it has hit a stasis point, rather than evolving further in any meaningful way.

It was nice to look back on the HGS era at Catoir. We'll never see those wines again.

  • A well-travelled bottle, imported by Michael Skurnik, Winebid.com back label, purchased at Christie's in Amsterdam in June 2011. Perfect level, label and cork. Lovely rich yellow gold colour; impressive aromatic profile of tropical fruit, flowers, wax, spice and minerals; excellent density and tension, medium-dry, juicy, lip-licking acidity; very good length, honeyed. An outstanding 2000. Completely intact two days later.

  • Winemakers (mostly) gone but not forgotten (La Silhouette, NYC): Still holding up very well, and one of the most impressive wines I've tried from a generally lousy vintage in Germany. There's bright peach and apricot fruit tinged with honey and high toned spicy elements, good sweetness and decent acidity keeping it nicely balanced. Very nice.

  • Another nice showing. Nose had nice lanolin notes, with white flowers and smokey minerals. Palate is dense and has sweetness to it, but with a nice kick of acidity to keep things in balance.

  • Very Scheurebe-like in its flavour profile with rich mango, peach and honeyed notes; there's a little phenolic roughness on the back end but aside from that it's a lovely wine that's all too easy to drink, and showing none of the issues of the vintage.
