  • Talk about exceeding expectations! This displays none of the vegetal character that plagues this vintage. Nice cabernet nose follows through on the palate, followed by a great finish. Perfect for drinking now, but no hurry.

  • Historic note. I have had this on 4 occasions, the last time on this date and it has always been truly superb - full of cassis, cedar and mulberries. The 1978 vintage is, in my view, an underrated year overall and one that I still seek out as it is much cheaper on the whole than later quality vintages. Highlights that I've had include: Chateau Margaux, Grand Puy Lacoste, Domaine de Chevalier and most recently Langoa Barton (in 2005). However, the Sociando Mallet in this vintage is a match for any of them - indeed I'd say it is my wine of the vintage though the Margaux runs it close. I have been looking for some more for years but have not yet found any. It was still youthful when I had it 10 years ago so I expect it will still be great.
