  • Mid gold, vibrant, green tint.
White flower, apricot, candied fruits on the nose.
Immensely complex and intense, floods the mouth and lingers for ages, but leaves a fresh, clean finish. Not cloying at all, really superb stuff and a great bottle. Cork was perfect.

  • I have not had this for years, and I must say that time has done this bottle a lot of good. The nose still smelt really youthful, with layers of honey, flowers and stone fruit lined with some minerally aromas. It was the palate that showed the most growth. It had the chewy, juicy transperancy that I love in good German Rieslings, with kumquat acidity lifting sweet flavours of ripe apples, honey and treacle. Just a bit heavy at the back-end, but a pretty good wine nonetheless. This will continue to improve.

  • Chilled and opened to pair with spicy shrimp rice dish. A golden yellow in the glass, the reticent nose featuring granny smith apple and subtle honey. Juicy orange marmalade, apricot, granny smith apple and honey on the palate, with no tingling acidity to balance things out. Just a touch of minerality, not sure how this will develop over time. However, was a good pairing with the spicy dish.

  • Dinner with Monthly Group at Mong Hing (Mong Hing, Keypoint, Singapore): The last of my stash - this remains a very pleasant Rheinghau. It seems to have developed somewhat from the last outing, with little earthy, rubbery notes emerging on the nose alongside honey aromas shading into figs and apricots and peach and sweet apples and a touch of flowers. The palate was rather less forward. It still had some of the sweetness of youth, but the 2007 richness had rounded up somewhat to show a juicy mouthful of apples and peach lined with a little hint of minerality. Nothing special, but quite a yummy wine. While providing quite a bit of pleasure now, it really does deserve a lot more time in the cellar.

  • Mid-Week Chill (Tung Lok Signatures, Central): I can hardly believe that I got through 5 bottles of this stuff. It always struck me as a good, even very good, but never great bottle. This was one of the better ones though, perhaps helped by a wonderful pairing with deep fried prawns in a salted-egg-yolk batter. The nose showed nice notes of honey, nectar and nectarines with a peachy stone fruit note. The palate came across as rich as always, with lots of power in the tank, but for once, it seemed but nicely bolstered by fresh acidity and a nice backbone of mineral. The flavours were still primary, with stone fruit, pear and maybe a touch of cherry-flesh, but the wine was certainly more in balance and better focused than the last couple of bottles. The finish had even started to shed some of its overt sugariness. It was still a bit one dimensional at the back-end, but I am now a whole lot more convinced about the wine's quality. All it needs is a good amount of age now.
