  • From a good looking bottle with a HS fill, this wine had a red center and light red/tawny rims. The medium intensity nose put forth plums, sauteed cherries, candied fruit, some soil, and some alcohol.

This developed very well with air which reduced the impact of the alcohol as the fruit increased. It was very smooth in the mouth with great richness and length.

Others that have a palate that is more attuned to port may have rated this higher.

  • Upon opening, this had the cherry candy (Luden’s cough drops) up front that l love upon opening an old vintage port. It’s an assurance of the freshness and youth to come. This opened in the glass over some hours to fistfuls of exotic spice and inscense smoke with bright and sound acidity and viscous body. A strong undercurrent of walnut oil that I’ve noticed in Fonseca vintages as recent as 1985 is only subtly graced by the orange peel and dusting of cocoa powder which only begin to belie its age to the palate. But I don’t think this could ever be mistaken for a younger colhieta of any pedigree even with your eyes closed.

  • From a pristinely cellared bottle, this medium amber wine is packed with sweet fruit which is beautifully balanced by fresh acidity. Full-bodied and with soft residual tannins, it delivers aromas and flavors of ripe plums, red licorice, smoke, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco and toasted walnuts. Rich and dense in the middle and amazingly long on the finish, this Port achieves perfection and will easily reach its centennial. Drink now-2050.

  • Wine of the night -- among a dozen legendary offerings... This '48 still holds strong, with great fruit and backbone... I sucked the fumes out of the bottle!

  • FTLOP 10th Anniversary Vintage Ports 1960 and older (Lake Sammamish, WA): Bright red color, strong nose, soft on palate, core fruit, dense, so smooth, caramel, bright Rose color over time, hot cinnamon. Good showing. While the group preferred the '48 Taylor, I gave this a slight edge.
