  • Day 2. Salil is right on about this. The nose shows some lively 90 acid that goes with some tart lime, but it's not integrated with anything else - there's some apple, and a bit of herbs and creamy notes, along with some petrol and sugary aromas. Palate is a bit funky, with petrol, lots of acid that seems lime-ish, and a bit of apple and spice, but this is really hollow and dried out. The finish is very tart and burning, but there's nothing else. Disappointing. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13/20.

  • Again, a totally soaked cork with black scruff on top of the cork - must have leaked, suffered some poor storage, or just a poor cork. Honeyed pineapple nose. Tertiaries abound - Lipton tea, limeade, bitter peach pit atop a waxy, decently acidic, yellow tropical fruit profile. Completely dry, yet still fruit laden and spicy, very long finish. Losing some of its vibrancy and fading after about 30 minutes in glass. Beautiful, drink now.
Next day - rebounding and very solidly brilliant. A gem.

  • Completely soaked and seeping cork. Purchased at auction last year. Bright, medium brass/gold color. Baked ripe red apple nose, loaded with subtle tertiaries - honey, understated diesel, carambola, lanolin. Fully integrated sugars, this tastes entirely dry, is medium bodied, with prickley acidity, a laserlike focus and teeth coating minerality. Packed with key lime, hints of marzipan and a powdered rock component, this is SO good. (Concur with the isaacjamesbaker note below - good call on the marmalade!) Initially showing like it was fading with time in glass, this continued to drink well over three evenings, very slowly diminishing to a thinner, but still delicious and weighty lemon profile. Savor, and drink up. A gem.

  • A Thursday Night Embarassment of Riches (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): An absolutely beautiful aged riesling. Gorgeous aromas of petrol, orange peel, marmalade and a hint of white flower. Huge acid on the palate provides freshness and elegance, supporting the rich flavors of dried pineapple, mango and apricot. Fleshed out with nougat and bracing minerals. This is everything I love about Mosel riesling, and Maximin Grünhauser in particular. I'd love to taste this again in five years. There was a lot of discussion amongst the older folks at the tasting that 1990 was their favorite vintage. With a wine like this, it's understandable.

  • Weygandt Wine BYO (Weygandt Wines, Cleveland Park, Washington D.C.): Beautiful stuff. The nose had great petrol, lychee and petrichor tones, while the palate added tropical notes like peach and mango. Exotic palate with great acid on the finish. A beautifully aged Kabinett and makes you take note that these wines can certainly have the stuffing to age for quite a while.
