Burgundy Wine Club 10th Anniversary Dinner: Amidst a quartet of Jean Gros Richebourgs, this one was to me the most undervalued. It shows way older than the others, much older even thatn the 1982, which is still a wine of great fruit and textural plushness and power. This '78 is showing bones, it's the rocks and soil now, most everything else has melted away. But the wine is a Richebourg, made beautifully, and it is not gentle just because it's old. I loved how powerful it still is, how vibrant it smells and tastes, even though there is only the memory of fruit. It still fills the mouth and sinuses with perfume, and is very long and pungent. Some said that it is anonymous as a Richebourg, that it's just beautiful old Burgundy. But I do not agree with that, I felt it's Richebourg-ness evident via it's raw power and pungency, and the memory of spice and fruit on the finish. There's no upside to waiting, though, and if I had more I'd find appreciative friends and drink it.

A 40-Year Retrospective on 1978's (Los Olivos, CA): I wish I had more time with this beguiling wine, not the best bottle based on others notes but still showing flashes of beauty: mushroom, soy, soil and sweet berries. Still, my score is more sentimental than usual here.

A fully mature nose thoroughly ripe, round and vibrant. The palate is solid, very '78 in character with classic, sturdy weight. Huge saturation on this size and electric but power over elegance, and even a bit cumbersome. Very popular!

Perfect bottle, served blind. Brick colour, and looks quite young for a 1978 Burgundy. Very complex bouquet of mature fruit, tea, spices and red berries. With time in the glass it evolves to roses mixed with meat. What a marvelous wine! Multidimensional, extremely balanced and so elegant. This wine is really graceful. Quite light body and very feminim for a Richebourg In my own notes I compare this wine with Audrey Hepburn. This wine is a masterpiece! No doubt a Grand Vin exceptionel.

At the Union League with Clive, Bob and a group of friends; 3/26/2011-3/28/2011 (Union League Cafe, New Haven Ct.): Totally wonderful, more savage and intense than the Noellat. Most at the table liked this more. Clive thought they were both dead and accused the group of necrophelia.
