  • Retail $65(?). Responsible bottle (587g; 1lb 4.7oz). 100% Pinot Noir. As I mentioned in my previous note (from 2019[!]) that I have a fond affinity for the wines of Santenay. They were good (even if a bit rustic) and inexpensive. While the former might still be true, the latter certainly isn't. Burgundy has gone through the roof in the past decade or so and even the "affordable" AOCs like Santenay and Saint Aubin are no longer accessible on a daily-wine kind of basis. Still, it was nice to head down memory lane a bit here tonight, with similar notes, but it is showing even better than it did way back in 2019.

  • I bought four of these, way back in 2007(!) and this is the first that we have opened(!). Santenay was my gateway to Burgundy, way back when. As a struggling teacher, leading bike trips in France over the summer, I did not have a boatload of cash to drop on wine. The rustic yet tasty wines from Santenay, however, were reasonably priced and allowed me to delve into the Burgundian flavors and mystique without having to figure out how I was going to pay rent. This 1er Cru is a bit dark, on the border of brooding, but nowhere close to stewed, with dark cherry, lilac, and earth (no barnyard to speak of here either). The palate is close to pure Pinot pleasure: fruit, zingy tartness, lengthy finish. While my income has increased, sadly so have the prices of even the more "affordable" wines from Burgundy, rendering them mostly a fond memory. I still have a few bottles, though, and I will cherish each one.
