  • Limited bricking at the rim, but not/ no longer bright. Very cola nose, but with nice earthy, farmyard tones coming through. Attack is very round/ soft but still a lingering unresolved/ unripe tannin (stems!?). Acidity is lovely, it’s just the tannins that stop it being great nearly 20 years in.. will leave my last bottles to 2022 just in case the fruit can wear them down. Nice one Jim!

  • Hey hey, this is really good. The age is starting to get some nice earthy and soily notes into the wine, yet the fruit is not fading as it shows a cool black cherry component. Also has some tangy mushroom notes and just vivid, nothing like the Aubert I had next to it. If the old ABCs taste like this, man, these are some nice aging wines. At more than 10 years, this is terrific. Clearly made in a more restrained style, which I really enjoyed but there is also plenty of fruit here to keep me happy. Very good. PS--the bottle is a damn weapon, and it must weight like 5 pounds--I ain't kidding. Gotta be the heaviest wine bottle I have ever poured from.

  • If there was a competition for the wine in the heaviest bottle this would win by a mile. It must be twice the weight of any other bottle I've ever held.

As for the wine: The colour is lush, glossy and fairly deep red for a pinot noir. The nose at first is overwhelming - burnt cherry, smoke and a rich sweetness and overpowering fruit. Very impressive nose that develops well in the glass. In the mouth very full, complex but chewy. Chewy is probably the best word for this wine. There is no doubt that this wine was drunk far too young but after a couple of small glasses this wine was fairly hard work - just a bit too rich and a bit too strong. This is not to detract from a wonderful wine, but I would really suggest keeping the cork in the bottle for a few years yet to let the wine soften, integrate and lose some of that sticky chewiness. Nevertheless a very impressive wine, although not cheap at £38 in the UK Very good but will improve with time.
