  • Grenache 50%
    Mourvèdre 35%
    Shiraz 15%
On museum release list at cellar door, purchased last weekend.
    Screwcap.
    Lots of sediment.
    Dark mature red.
Secondary nose: tary, greasy, but with some feminine red fruits and confection, spice notes along the lines of anise and caraway.
Palate more youthful than nose, lively acidity, tannic resolve, dark red and purple fruits, almost a baked quince like character, some tar, more primary. Weightless but not especially complex.
    14.5% alcohol.
    Nice GSM blend.

  • The issue here is rancio and your tolerance for same. The good is very good, but the rancio element will divide us. I find it distracting and, ultimately, irritating. Like a dog returning to its vomit, I kept coming back but it never really shed the naughtiness.

The good is a wine gum character so beloved of a good comrade (and it should be beloved), a hint of prune, supportive, fine tannins and a wine that is all that is good about the Barossa, without the heaviness and lumpen proletariat. The negative is that damned rancio element. Some won't be fussed by this. It isn't expensive, so get out there and try it. Still available via the winery.

  • Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): This was drinking incredibly well. It's a different style than most Aussie wine from '05 (i.e. it's not meant to be big or extracted or any of that). It's old world style with new world wine making. I found myself going back for seconds and thirds. Very nice. Has many more years left so will let the other bottle rest for a bit. At the price point incredibly hard to beat.

  • Firm and tight for the style. Very much about dark fruits. Kinda serious and whilst not heavy going seems to have a structure that would be sympathetic to medium term cellaring. Opened up well to reveal fruity prune and raspberry characters.
