[Grand Millesime's Bordeaux:The Legendary Years 1928-1961 dinner at Circa Restaurant, Melbourne] Medium deep garnet, semi-translucent with some bricking. Mature bouquet of stewed black fruits with undertones of earth, cassis, tobacco, leather, truffle, cedar & graphite still held together with no serious decay yet; later, some notes of espresso, fig & prune. Medium plus, quite intense, deep, dense-looking core of tiring black fruits well supported by traces of melting ripe tannins & plenty of acidity; with time in glass, the mid palate became dry & lean as the superfluous acidity began to show through. Long, sturdy but torpid finish. At its best (88)

Opening an old bottle can be quite a challenge, this one did! The cork was covered with black dirt, but that stuff actually turned out to be a lifesaver, as soon as i inserted the corkescrew some wine came out of the 'wound' i just made, it had actually closed the bottle quite effectively. The corke however came loose and quite soon, despite our efforts, fell in the bottle, furtunately we already removed all the dirt on forehand. We all took a good amount of wine in those big christaline bordeaux glasses and started our tasting. The wine had a, hard to believe after so many years, very dark color which only turned to orange at a very thin line around the rim. That is quite something for a wine with an age of 51 years! The nose started a bit slow, it was closed at the time we poured the wine but after a few minutes it opened up, wow, ever had a experience in which a wine opens up and then gives you a full pallate of scents? This one did! Asparagus, tomato, dead leafs, later blackberry, chocolat and all sort of spices. The taste... we all were silent for a minute or two, everyone was totally absorbed by this, berries, cassis, spices, chocolat and al lot of vegetables. Quite a combination and that balance!, the first taste was really a mouth full round, open, then came a part in which all those aroma's came through, in the end a looooong finish, all rounded up with a beautifull sweetnes which was underneath all those things. I scored it 95 /100

St. Estephe night. My second favorite wine of the night above the pair of older Cos. Wonderful fragrant nose of redberries, flowers, rock. Despite the age, wine had powerful red and black fruits combined with minerals, tobacco notes. Very smooth with stark acidity. Kept going back to this wine and the '90 Montrose.

St. Estephe Night (Home of Mike and Sandra O.): Mild bricking, though much more crimson than the ’66 lafon Rochet. A wonderfully expressive wine, with floral aromatics mixed with the sweetness of someone smoking a pipe nearby. Completely mature fruit with a caramel quality on the palate and a menthol edge. Finished with a medium length, not terribly complex finish, still showing some dry tannin. Over the course of the evening this became more flamboyant, with sweeter fruit and less tobacco. A truly memorable wine, which points and words do not fully capture.

Wine Education Service - Fine Old Bordeaux (Imperial College): Just opaque, red-brown.
Treacle toffee, earthy, raisined nose, somewhat transitory.
Mineral, slightly fruity (sour cherries), dry mid palate.
