Chateau bottled and recorked in 2002. And what a pleasure to pull a cork on a 60 year old bottle of wine without any sign of breaking. Sweet blackcurrant fruit immediately evident on removing the cork. Excellent colour. Mature, but no bricking whatsoever and still quite a deep colour. Remarkable nose: blackcurrant fruit to the fore, maybe some cherry and a gentle sent verging on a high tone. But what a big, full nose for a 60 year old. Feeling rather older in the mouth than it looks and smells. Nicely balanced. Some soft tannins remain, particularly noticeable on the finish. Elegant and in a very good place.

A Berry Bros bottled label with level at upper shoulder. Huge nose when decanted. Loads of sludgy sediment. Cigar box, leather and liquorice. Colour on the lip is light brick and in the glass suprisingly dark. Plenty of body still and a long penetrating finish. Tannins are fully resolved yet there is no lack of structure. Good quality bottles still have decades of life ahead. Much more youthful than expected. Broadbent called this chunky and sweet in the 1980s and you can clearly see how the wine has progressed from there.

Château Beychevelle Vertical: Somewhat oxidized. Showing nice cigar box, red cedar, and intriguing dark teas on the nose. A little too tired and decrepit for the age, have had far older Bordeaux in far better shape. Unfortunately underwhelming.

(Château Beychevelle) Bricked medium red color with pale meniscus; mature, Barolo-like, dried cherry nose; mature, tart cassis, dried cherry palate with very resolved tannins and medium acidity; medium-plus finish
