Nose: prune, dried plum, shoe oil, tar, rice, leather Notes: Started with a rather typical Brunello nose with a good mixture of prune, plum and tar. I must say it is still very difficult for me to appreciate a Brunello if all the notes are so dark and heavy. Consumed after opening for 3-4 hours I am unable to see much improvement on overall profile while the palate starts to deteriorate. One can say that the mature prune and dried plum flavors are difficult to find in French wines yet it is difficult to find excitement behind these notes. This could well be a personal thing as this is clearly not my preferred style. No further aging shall be required for this wine. Some wines are either a hit or miss for drinkers and this is certainly a miss for me. I cannot complain about the complexity of the wine but I just couldn't find a reason to like this wine despite all the good words from the community. Drink: now+ Rating: 87

Wow, a stunning wine. Intense, complex aromatics. Significant concentration yet refined with so much complexity unfolding over time. Outstanding and at peak.

I had no time for a formal note, but I just had to tone in and say that the '95 Poggio di Sotto Brunello Riserva is showing amazingly well. It's like Burgundy, meets Barolo, yet it's Brunello... The bouquet was elegant yet lifted and sweetly spiced, with a palate feel of pure silky with the purest red berry fruits which seemed to hover across the senses. What a pleasure to be able to taste it, and from magnum.

HK Wine Society Tasting & Dinner: Mature Brunello, 1975-1998 (Langham Palace Hotel, Mongkok, Hong Kong): Tasted blind in a line-up of 12. Colour is rich, deep semi-transparent jeweled ruby. Nose is closed - oaky, too much varnish, too young. Palate is a lovely accessible balance of fruit and oak but still very primary. Chocolate. Heady and muscular. Needs quite a few more years to develop. Apparently an under-recognized producer and an under-recognized vintage so is good QPR.....it might have something to do with the very 'rustic' label on the bottle.
