I'm no longer a huge fan of Girardin's whites, though a recent Corton Charlemagne was shockingly good. Too much oak treatment, frankly. So, when I found this in the cellar I wasn't expecting much. However, once popped, I was surprisingly impressed. At first sniff, this was full of bright cherries wrapped around a core of earthy sous-bois and a hint of wood. Upon tasting, it was typical of 1998s, super tight and tart with a watery feel that hinted at better to come with patience. I let it sit open for a few hours before pouring it at a party. What a difference: it had rounded out, showing similar aspects as the nose, with rustic tannins and a mid-length finish on a mid-weight frame. Good on its own, this is definitely a food wine, and really shone with charcuterie.
