  • Dinner with ACYSO. This was WOTN for me - it had a complex nose and palate. Dried fruits (apricot), orange zest and spice perfume. I really liked how the palate had thickness and grip - harmony with no sharp edges and round. This went down very fast. Excellent.

  • Dinner at S.K.Y. with The Little Horse and Ms. Bubblehead II (Chicago, IL): #20-95, 7% abv. This was a better performing bottle than my last, which I think was slightly done in by a loose cork. Kaleidoscopic on the nose, with a complex array of primarily botrytis-derived flavours. Dried apricots, brown sugar, orange peels, and some other spicy things. The palate is very viscous but never cloying -- just the right amount of acidity to balance it out. But at the same time, the acidity is never racy and hard; there's just a beautiful roundness here. Fully ready to drink.

  • Served in Riedel white wine stem. Leaf; 1020 hPa.

A roller coaster in the best way. Initially, there were some concerns as to integrity of the bottle, as the cork effortlessly slid out. Reduction readily present, but carried an initial nose of eraser, rubber, and just overall rather subdued. Patience and time proved otherwise. The second pour after ~45 minutes open exploded with fruit - nectarines, orange marmalade, tangelo, peach, cantaloupe and pear skins. Incredibly decadent aromas of raw honey and spice. Some petrol starts to show with even more air. The palate followed with even more pronounced honeycomb. The marmalade, nectarine, and stone fruit from the nose carry forward in full force along with some coconut oil. Bright acidity keeps an intense sweetness in check - everything is in balance here. Over time, some smoke and minerality show adding even more complexity. The finish is long, with lip smacking sweetness and acidity.

Overall just a totally thrilling bottle of wine. Thanks to Adrian for opening this up - a real treat and just totally in another echelon of wines.

Postscript - our somm was extremely excited to pair with A5 Miyazaki Wagyu. This combo did not disappoint!

  • #20-95, 7% abv. The cork came out with no resistance (it would have fallen in if we poked at it), so there was quite a bit of consternation and worry on my part. Sadly, this bottle wasn't as good as my first bottle of this, although I was more than happy to see that this didn't suffer from any undue oxygen ingress. The nose is intensely reductive, with plastic, rubber, and erasers all terms that were thrown about. However, underneath it is still a kaleidoscopic array of marmalade, stone fruit, and herbs. The palate is much better than the nose, showing both breadth and depth. Expansive, with an almost waxy quality, that is readily cleaned up by the intense, racy acidity. Generously sweet, but also generously acidic and perfectly balanced. Extremely long finish.

  • Nothing like Chicago hospitality...; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016: Holy god. I had exceptionally high expectations for this (as I usually do with Egon Muller's wines), and yet it outperformed. An amazing fragrance with all sorts of ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavours, honey and vanilla botrytis notes, exotic spiciness, and those classic high toned Saar herbal/lime leaf notes all coming together into a scent that's hard to move away from. The palate is incredible - amazingly intense and sweet, yet that powerful '94 acidity keeps it so light on its feet and impeccably focused. Some of the conversation compares this to the 2001 Yquem, but I reckon that's a no-contest - I will take this any day over the '01 Yquem or any other Sauternes I've had. Spectacular, to say the least.
