While the "lesser" bottlings from Girardin in 2003 are often dripping with lush, raw fruit characteristic of the vintage, this is serious wine. Dark cherry, almost plummy even with cola and mint underpinnings; good structure and substantial tannin still presenting, all in a nice package begging for several more years cellaring.

This wine still has good structure and fruit but slightly past peak and should decline from here. I think 2-3 years ago this could have been 1 to 2 points higher. I decanted for 45min.

Animal and funk aromas gave away to a more gentle earthiness with a balanced fruit. I gave it 1 hour of air and I feel that helped. I did not get any of the over-ripe features associated with 2003. very good to outstanding

darker hue than expected and more animally than prior bottles but the fruit and complexity are there. This was every bit as enjoyable as it was in 2011 and 2013 -clearly at a nice drinking plateau. I did not buy a lot of the 2003 but I have to say I drank the others too soon for them to show any of warmth and love that one hopes for in a Burgundy

(Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes) Bricking dark cherry red color with pale meniscus; sous bois, menthol, oak nose; tart cherry, cranberry, oak, mineral palate with sweet, firm tannins, needs 3-5 years; medium-plus finish
