  • 2001er Weingut Ed Weegmüller , Haardter Bürgergarten Spätlese Pfalz. Alc 8.5 %
Bought at release and cellared at 55 degrees
Nose of honeycomb, orange and Asian spices. Still clear yellow. No petrol
Lovely on the palate with just enough sweetness to counter the Thai chicken dish
Great balance. Finish is clean and has no bitterness
Still drinking on the younger side at 21 years

  • White fruit (peach, apple, slight mango), good acidity, nice sugar level. Floral. Bright. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable. Well knit.

  • Oh my, this is just a terrific bottle of Riesling that seems to be in a great spot right now. Light to medium golden in the glass with a terrific nose showing a nice mixture between young and more mature aromas. The theme continues on to the palate... with some of the more mature apricoty/darker fruit flavors intermingled with the more bright grapefruity type flavors encountered in younger Rieslings. There's also a nice streak of acidity lifting all of the flavors and providing a nice freshness that I think might dissapate 10-15(+??)years down the line as the wine approaches its final plateau of maturity. In short, this is a really good wine that seems to be in a great place for drinking right now, particular if you like your rieslings right in that sweet spot between youth and maturity (although the wine was just as strong on day two... I think this has many years of positive change ahead of it if you prefer your rieslings with more mature characteristics). I wonder if some of the other '01s are starting to open up like this??

  • Light gold color. Really nice layered fragrance of apple, stone fruits, tropical fruits and even oily petrol, layered taste on the palate with dominant acid, subdued residual sugar.

  • Not nearly as showy as the Wittmann, this wine was much more linear compared to the opulence of the Aulerde. Grapefruit and mineral tones took center stage, and really gave the impression of requiring more cellar time. So typically for 2001 the hit rate is 50% for wines being ready to drink versus needing more time to show themselves. There's some very good depth here, but even a couple of hours didn't loosen it up much.
