- Garnet color and aromas of tobacco, molasses, black pepper and coffee. It's lacking fruit and has flavours of black pepper, tobacco, tea, blackberry and oak with a light/medium body. Linear texture with a medium finish - Ten years in the bottle and holding firm. Not getting better but drinking nicely.

This just did not do it for me...not much going on, not terrible...nose was very overpowering with mediciny alcohol...back end was very tannic, even on second day, and had a bitter aftertaste...mid pallette was decent, lush and rich in the mouth, but not a whole of of flavors going on...I did not pay for this bottle, and I won't be buying any in the future.

Benefited from a brief chill and a 30-minute decant. Peppery as advertised. Gentle tannins. Fruitlet as the night progressed. Good with roasted pork. Didn't quite stand up to the postprandial cigar.

I've come to appreciate the Benziger style, after having quite a few different varietals now: full-bodied, somewhat extracted, intense and concentrated, and very flavorful. This merlot reflects this overall house style. Dark ruby, the nose and palate were both of black fruits (blackberry and black currant), tobacco and oak. No red fruits, no spices, and not very much fruit period. Lots of oak, rendering a distinct tobacco note. Quite good, and a decent match for dry-rubbed London Broil.
