  • Disgorged 10-2017. 70% Chard, 30% PN. Balanced and agreeable, with yellow citrus, white melon, yellow pear, ripe yellow apple, and some white stone notes. Medium all the way around, with a mouth-coating texture that offers hints of richness and precise focus. Not overly chiseled, but definitely not on the super brioche or popcorn side of the house either. Slices a notable divide between summer porch sipper and wine geek grower Champagne. Gains points for an easy ride that satisfies on both pleasure and subtle-cerebral fronts. Drink now and over the next 5+ years.

  • From 75cl. Batch L 11 12. Almost identical to my previous impressions (TN 24.12.2017 and before). Apple, some wood, hint of ginger, on the sweeter side of Brut. Best 90 minutes after opening; use big glasses, open well in advance and let it warm up gradually. Fine but not profound. 90P

  • Lunch at New Ubin. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Frothy bubbles. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of chalky minerals, citrus lemon curd, lemon-lime, white peach, touch of honey. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of chalky minerals, citrus lemon curd, lemon-lime, white peaches, nice salinity married to the touch of honeyed sweetness. Sizzling long finish.
Very good quality. Great aperitif champ to start. Crisp, bright, and generous.
    Disgorged 2017. 70& Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir.

  • Off bottle. Corked, I think. Foul regardless

  • Perhaps a BIT disappointed here. I found that if I put this in anything more than a flute, the bubbles were done after about 10 minutes. Not cool! The nose has a lot of yellow fruit, dried herb. Entry is 1/2 sweet, 1/2 tart, and actually quite delicious with little bubbles. A little bit of creme brulee, finishes rather strong, but again the bubbles were flat rather quickly if I let the bubbles breathe. Not a bad champers, and I think honestly Vilmart offers some RATHER good value for what you get. This bottle was an 89.99, which IMO squeaks out the 90.

(NV Vilmart & Cie "Cuvée Grand Cellier" Brut) ($79.00) 50% ’08, and 25% each ’07-’06. 70%PN/30%CH. Disgorged 4/10. The wine has always been excellent, but it used to be more starched and not entirely knit, and now it’s silkier. This is certainly among the very best of the last fifteen years, with the clinging flower of ’08 and the warm, honeyed ’06 dancing in graceful counterpoint. Mirabelles and apple sauce against lavender and wisteria, a little more springy than usual, with a refined, incense-y finish.
