My first amarone. This needed a lot of time. I'd used the coravin to extract a couple glasses out over the last year. The first time, the wine was a tannic beast. The tannins weren't unpleasant, but the only reading that I got was in the texture (& a hint of black fruit). This time around, I opened the bottle on Sunday, left it get 2+ hours of air. It wasn't nearly as tannic & some fruit was showing through, but it was out of sync. I recorked the bottled and put it in the fridge. The next day, after popping the cork and giving it a couple hours, it came around and had much better balance. There's still a black fruit core in here, though there started to be more nuances built around it as it got more and more air.

2 hour decant. Big, sweet, mouth filling Amarone. Fully resolved tannins. Lots of dark fruit and black cherry. Paired with a chilli (sic) for which it was more than a match. Suspect this could last many more years so no rush if you are lucky enough to have some but sadly my last bottle.

Dark ruby. Aromas of stewed plum, black cherry, dried earth, mushroom, a little bit spirity too. The palate has powerful flavours of rich black cherry, baked currants, earthy, mushroom, forest floor, integrated tannins and very long finish. A big wine but lovely balance.

Drank with Roast beef up at Mackerel Beach. Big and smooth. Tannins very subdued, but you can sense the 15.5% in the background. Chocolate, cassis, its probably nearing it's peak. Slight loss as had poor quality wine glasses.

(Corte Sant' Alda Amarone della Valpolicella) This is no ordinary high-priced Amarone. First, it is not from the Classico district, but from the hills farther east; second, it is made by one of only three female winemakers in the region, Marinella Camerani. The wine has intense, chocolatey, oaky, complex aromas and a super-smooth, silky palate. It has excellent concentration, firm tannins, and a lovely weight of ripe, sweet fruit that finishes dry and long. A beautiful and complex wine to linger over. Hot Picks
