Usually a fan of Ravenswood, and always a fan of Petite Sirah, this one was a little disappointing. True, Ravenswood is known more for. it's structured wines, rather than fruit forward, but this one was rather on the rough side. Most of that roughness came from big acid, but some also probably were from 24 months in 100% new oak. which I suspect was some American. I was expecting heavy duty blueberry fruit, and thought this 2007 which is 4 years off the vine might have had a chance to age out and integrate some of that oak and acid. It got a little better as we drank through the bottle. The finish, outside of the roughness began to show some potential with some tar, and graphite enhancing a developing blackberry structure. Maybe we should try another bottle.

Excellent for the price (~$8), there's a nice blend of fruit that doesn't overpower, pleasant acidity, and an undertone of some highly understated spice. Pleasant finish.

Decanted with the Vinturi and allowed to stand for 45 minutes. Nose: Some dark fruit, slight tinge of bacon. Color: Purple. Body: Nice and heavy Taste: Modest fruit on entry followed by modest structure. Not much spice. Finish: Short, but no off notes. Overall: At this price point ($6.99 at Total Wine), a decent effort for this varietal. However, we probably won't buy again.
