Drank this last night at Summer Pavilion (Ritz-Carlton). Theme of the night: Wines from 2005.
A warm, rounded and smooth wine with some pepper in the finish. Generous red fruits (berries and plums) on the nose and palate with some tropical fruits evolving after 30 minutes. Some complexity and dimensions in this wine.

Surprisingly good. Can't say I have much of a mental benchmark for SA Syrah, but this impressed. At 7 years it is still showing a vibrant deep hue in the glass with only minimal bricking at the rim. Perfumed in an old world style with savoury and leather influence and a touch of something floral and herbal amid a broad swaythe of black plums and berries. Palate is complex and offers rich yet silky fruit, some savoury influence again and a fine framework of dusty and well integrated tannin. All well balanced and ultimately delicious.

Deep red. Day 1: Nose hot and sweet fruits; nothing definable. Taste melange of sweet and leathery spice (Imperial leather?). Alcohol and tannins very noticable, perhaps too warm. Either I don't get syrah or this is overpriced. Day 2.Chilled for 15 minutes. Nose summer fruit jams and a touch of leather. Still the drying tannins and no subtlety at all. Calmer mouthfeel, good fruit/spice balance but soupy and no definition. I really struggled to maintain my interest in it.

A complex mouthful of pepper & spice with a dash of fruit, fine crunchy tannins. Delicious
