Cork. 13.5% alc. Level into the neck. Decanted - fine sediment. Cork barely stained. Colour was still impenetrably dark crimson. Blue fruits, vanilla, liquorice, leather, coconut. Not all primary, but it impressed with its rather youthful vigour. Settled and refined on the palate, with medium weight and intensity. Fine, integrated tannins. Fine example of the style.

Double decanted 3 hours before consuming. Drank head to head with the 1998 389. The comparison was almost exactly as expected. Both wines were fantastic. The 1996 more refined , great balalnce , the 1998 was bigger richer heavier fruit. Both wines in amazing shape.

Bob’s cellar. Deep dark inky black red. Nose is tar and liquorice, black fruits with a touch of red, aniseed, very slow to open up. Flavours coiled with a tannic edge, black liquorice, salty and very moreish.

Bob's cellar. Dark inky red, there is a tinge of bricking. Nose is full, leathery, blackcurrants and plums, tar and liquorice. Opened 4 hours ago, just double decanted. Reticent fruit, tannins are brisk, a bit peppery, the tasting is also black liquorice, and tar, background acidity. A fresher bottle than others. A few hours later and this is rather good. The black fruit and depth is controlled and interesting. There is aged fruit, depth and leather, tar and more - excellent.

Medium minus intensity aromas of leather, dark fruits; blackberry; blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little alcohol, very slight caramel and vanilla. Juicy, sweetly fruited, leathery drying tannins, less obviously umami than the 2002. Nice
