  • Aged for 18 months in French oak pièces (20% new). 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Translucent, somewhat developed ruby red color with a hint of aged brick-red hue towards the rim. The nose feels ripe, rich and quite fruity with bold aromas of sweet black cherries, some stewed rose hips, a little bit of succulent plummy fruit and a hint of sweet, toasty oak spice. The wine is medium-bodied, crunchy and quite extracted - yet not big or heavy - on the palate. Flavor-wise there's a lot of things going on: there are bright flavors of cranberries and tart lingonberries, some wizened darker berries, a little bit of developed dried fruit character, light notes of herbal bitterness and a hint of liquorice. The wine comes across as pretty impressively structured with its high acidity and ample, noticeably grippy tannins. The finish is long, grippy and quite noticeably mouth-drying with long and lively flavors of ripe cranberries, some tart lingonberries, light herbal bitterness, a little bit of rough earthy Pinosity, a hint of wizened dark berries and a touch of developed liquorice character.

Many people guessed that this was a Nebbiolo at around 15 years of age, mainly because of its high acidity and noticeable tannins. At first I thought of agreeing, but the more I tasted the wine, the more hesitant I became - there's something very similar in the lighter Nebbiolos and more structured Pinot Noirs - and I decided on Burgundy. My guess was - based on the rather sappy fruit, noticeable tannins and high acidity - Pommard from the 2006 vintage. Close, but no cigar. Overall a very impressively structured, sinewy and tightly-knit wine that is starting to show the first signs of age, but which overall seems still so very young. A lot of room for future development here: most likely the wine will need at least a decade before starting to reach its optimal drinking window and I'm not sure if these grainy tannins will ever resolve fully. Recommended, especially or people who like their Burgundies with a bit of muscle.
