PnP. ABV 13.5%. €60 before taxes and shipping charges. Nose was dominated by wet earth with just a touch of flower notes lurking behind, very NSG like. Still some tannins hanging around, firm mid-palate, good length and complexity. Oaks yet be fully integrated, a Burgundy for Bordeaux drinker? Finished with plenty of dark soils notes lingering on. Not your floral, silky, and sexy Volnay, more like a sturdy and burly version, would guess NSG if tasted blind, not really my preferred style of Volnay. In early stage of drinking window with years to go. Side note, recent vintages of this cuvee were made very differently, lightly extracted and less oaky. ‘16 and ‘17 were very good when opened a few months ago.
Second of two bottles held since release. Last tasted in 2013. Still dark red. As before there are leather, earth, coffee and dark red fruit aromatics but now so much more delicate. The tannins are resolving and the fruit is now more crystallized and sweet.

Far better than anticipated. 30 minutes of decanter air. Not too oaky IMO as others have described...a pleasant surprise. Fine boned Volnay red fruit, nice acidity (attributable to that limestone?), a feature I really appreciate here. Has time to improve, too, perhaps another 4+ years. Revisited the last glass next day and it was singing. Best bottle of any Girardin I've tasted.

It seems that Girardin consistently has a heavy hand with oak which unfortunately detracts from the beautiful fruit in this wine. Much of the Volnay character is overwhelmed by oak, both in bouquet and aroma. Sealed half the bottle with vacuvin and enjoyed more on the next day when the oak was less dominant.

Nice black cherry fruit, earth, good acid/tannin/fruit balance, but overlaid with too much oak and gloss. B-/B
