  • Whenever I open a 2006 White Rose, I am reminded of one of our less successful visits to the winery a few years back (normally they are stellar provided Dago is around) and being warned ominously by a uniformed (?) tasting room attendant that the '06s "were falling off the table." All I can say is that the table must be very high because they ain't fallen yet on the evidence of this bottle. Sovarae featured seldom in the WR lineup. I think I tasted one other vintage once and not this one until now. One of the few remaining in the cellar with the dragon labels before the rebranding exercise and the evolution into "neoclassical." A nice pale ruby, very clear, a slightly reductive nose upon opening, some funky notes, brilliant spicy tart cherry on the palate, some like clove and nutmeg. Over the course of three days consumption it stood up very well, no obvious decay.

  • On the nose, spice box, brown sugar, forest floor with pinot sourness in the background- absolutely intoxicating. One of those "I don't need to drink it, I can just sniff it" type of wines.

On the palate, performs best on the pop, where it is richly dense and lush. 10 minutes in the glass and it flattens out quite a bit, showing some stems and a slight astringency on the finish, along with mild tannins. None of that would be of note if it hadn't started so strong out of the gate. Popping this for a dinner party in 6 hours, so maybe it will settle down by then. In the meantime, still 92 points for me, give or take.

Update - the remaining 4/5 of a bottle, no decant but left open - stunning. Best wine of the night. As it relates to my earlier impression - more weight, better integrated. Beautiful.

  • Silky mouthfeel, fresh cherries and blackberry on the nose and pallet. Balanced amount of oak with nice length on the finish.

  • The nose is interesting on this wine. Starts by showing dark cherry, dark raspberry, damp earth, black licorice, corn syrup and violets. Later evolves to dark chocolate and a bright tobacco note along with orange peel. This wine is firm, intense and focused on the palate. It does not have the scratchy tannins anymore , the texture is beautiful and it seems more balanced than in the past and with a very long and enjoyable finish. This wine is very good right now and think it could evolve more with appropriate cellaring. I would give it 1 more year.

  • On the nose, red berries against an earth and forest floor background. On the palate, quite rich in body. Doesn't have the brightness on the finish that the '06 White Rose Vineyard showed. There is a touch of heat or astringency on the finish, I can't tell which. It does seem more apparent after a bit of time in the glass. Not sure if this will resolve itself with time.
