Bountiful aromatics of sweet tobacco, leather, dark plums, hint of spice. Tannins still present, but in a very refined way. A stunning bottle. Beautiful long finish. Wow! Would recommended to drink now as this bottle was in a great place (a place where I love drinking wine), but it definitely could be put down for longer if you wanted. From JH Cellar. Not decanted and poured straight from bottle. 96

Cork was awful, and oxidization was evident when first decanted. Given a few hours this styled and there was some nice mint and typical coonawarra aromas present. The palate was a bit flat, but there was still enough fruit to make it interesting. Quite silky tannin and overall good mouthfeel. Was certainly passed it, but still an enjoyable experience.

SLDS - September 2020 #2: Blind. Earthy, oak, graphite and tobacco with mint. Still has good grip on the palate to go along with the red fruit profile. Poised and balanced.

Totally dominated by funky tertiary flavours. Strange, unexpected notes on the nose: cream cheese, new leather, browned beef, almond essence, and a hint of horse hair. On the palate, there are big notes of blackberry and cranberry, but they're pushed into the background by huge notes of lightly-toasted oak and worn leather, complemented by notes of dried grass and barnyard. The fruit and acid are intense and slightly astringent, while the faded, still-big tannins are smooth and soft. This is drinking beautifully. With time, it feels more dry and powdery, but also reveals more flavour: hints of date, apple, caramel, and sherry.
This was radically different to the 1999 and the 1991 (which was only five years younger). The difference is more than I think is attributable to age and vintage variation. I think there must have been a significant difference in production methods between the 1986 and the younger John Riddochs, but I can't find any information online about how they were made.

Cork destroyed. Past it’s best. Simone says tastes like banana bread
