Hauled this out of the depths of the cellar. The cork split in two but the lower end was intact with a cassis fragrance still present. Opened up nicely after an hour. Great colour persists and still plenty of fruit. An amazing wine, given that JH was suggesting it be drunk in 2010!

Wow. The wine was still in amazingly pristine condition. The colour was still a bright deep red crimson. The wine was still surprisingly fresh with an initial tannic presence. The taste evolved/flipped over time from very balanced and elegant to more robust and even a bit fruit forward. There was even a youthful Cabernet boldness to it at times. Tasted a blend of currants, strawberry, blackberry with a leafy herbal character. Hard to know whether it needs more time. Excellent experience.

Still standing strong. A fair amount of sediment but retains surprisingly strong colour. I’m guessing this would have demonstrated over-oak earlier in life. The tannin structure is sound but fruit is suppressed. A hint of mushroom when first opened but this disappeared quickly. After 1 hour decanted it showed fortified characters with stewed/jam dark fruits and slight tomato bush. After 2 hours it had softened considerably. Typical Coonawarra terra rossa earthy characters.

I described a bottle opened in 2008 as "admirable and powerful but darkly brooding". 9 years on the wine has really opened up and has acquired subtlety and elegance while retaining most of its power. Colour still very opaque with little bricking. Nose well developed with notes of mature blackcurrant tinged red and dark fruit, balsamic and vanilla hints and that touch of noble greenness, which most Oz wines lack, to bring freshness and balance. Palate full/medium bodied with expressive fruit, some earthy minerals, velvety texture and fragrant overlay replaying the aromas from the nose across the whole palate leading to the remainder of some still sombre tannins supporting the finish. When I wrote my earlier TN, I recall an Australian expert saying that 1993 was a weak year in Coonawarra?! Excellent.

Despite it's age, showing no signs of fading. Rich, dark colour; attractive dark fruit and vanilla nose; still powerful, textured and full-bodied, tasting of black currants. Beautiful!
