  • No one’s noted this in 13 years? For me, Gruner of this age requires more of an open mind and palate than do orange wines and very old champagne. Not a big fan. But there are always exceptions! This bottle, cellar stored since release, has a long and very tight cork. A Terry Theiss selection, there is hope! Amber and gold, old hay color. Oxidized, but aromas of dried apricot and mango penetrate. The oxidation presents as parchment and manzanilla sherry, but the dried fruits, including banana and pineapple to the mix, along with surprisingly good acidity, maintain interest, a precarious balance. Some buckwheat and acacia honey flavors help. Finish is a little pit bitter and grassy, but not unpleasant. Reminds me of Jura. I roasted a chicken with dried apricots rehydrated with a glass of this and stock, and served it over an earthy bulgur and dried fruit pilaf. Paired carefully, this remains a joy to drink, but not for long!! Mostly dead in the glass after 2 hours.

  • Taking on slightly amber hue, showing some signs of maturity. Only complaint is that the alcohol (13% on the label but possibly more) is quite evident. Great nose. Not sure this will develop further -- I'd drink now.

  • Mature aromas of ripe fruit, a bit of wet stone and lots of white pepper on the finish. Slightly oxidative flavour but not oxidised - fully mature, honeyed fruit but quite dry, good weight and bags of minerally fruit on a modest finish. A little of the peppery note comes through in the flavour too. Good though fully mature flavours and a little one-dimensional overall.

(Willi Bründlmayer Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg) ($79.00) The 2002 is now a classic example of the way some GrüVes take on white Burgundy tones with age; this one’s a serious taste-a-like for one of the less mealy Meursault 1er Crus.
